Creating secure passwords and memorable passphrases

A unique, unpredictable password helps protect each account against automated guessing and credential reuse. Length and randomness matter more than clever substitutions. No password alone can prevent phishing, malware or a compromised service.

Why long, random passwords matter

  • Use at least 16 randomly generated characters when the service permits, and choose a different password for every account. Uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols expand the available character pool, but a short complex password can still be weak. This tool uses your browser’s cryptographic random-number generator and includes each selected character type. Its strength estimate reflects length and the character pool, not breach history or a guaranteed cracking time.

Everyday cybersecurity habits

  • Store passwords in a reputable password manager rather than reusing or writing them in shared notes. Enable multi-factor authentication, preferably a passkey or security key when supported. Keep software updated, check website addresses before signing in, and never share passwords or recovery codes. Replace a password if compromise is suspected. Copy only on a trusted device: clipboard history, extensions and other applications may be able to read copied text.

How to create a memorable secure passphrase

  • Choose five or six unrelated words independently and randomly from a large word list, for example with dice or a trusted password manager. Longer phrases can be easier to remember and type. Avoid quotes, song lyrics, personal details and predictable word sequences; punctuation alone does not make a familiar phrase secure. Use a unique phrase per account and follow the service’s length limits. This tool generates character-based passwords, not word-based passphrases.

Password security questions

Are generated passwords stored?

Generation takes place locally in your browser. This tool does not save passwords or submit them to a server. A compromised device or browser extension can still expose them; clipboard contents may persist after copying.

Does “Very Strong” guarantee my account is safe?

No. The indicator is a conservative estimate for randomly generated strings, not an assessment of your account. Phishing resistance, multi-factor authentication, device security and the service’s password storage remain essential.
